Once an ongoing crossposting workflow is running, there's a second decision that matters almost as much as setting it up: how quickly should each post actually appear on your destination accounts?

## Why timing is a separate decision from "should I automate this"

For back-catalog migrations, spacing posts out is about not flooding a new account with years of content at once. For ongoing crossposting, the timing question is different — it's about whether a post appearing on Instagram, then instantly on Facebook, then instantly on X, looks natural or looks automated in a way that reads as impersonal.

## The trade-offs at each end

**Posting to every destination immediately:**

- Keeps all your platforms in sync in near real-time
- Works well for time-sensitive content (announcements, live events, breaking updates) where every platform needs the news at the same time
- Can look repetitive to anyone who follows you across multiple platforms and sees the identical post land everywhere within minutes

**Spacing destinations out with a delay:**

- Feels more like the content was actually adapted for each platform, even when the core post is the same
- Reduces the "obviously automated" feeling for audiences who follow you in more than one place
- Isn't ideal for anything time-sensitive, since some destinations will lag behind the original post

## A reasonable default

For most non-urgent content — the majority of what gets crossposted — a delay of a few hours to a day between destinations tends to strike a workable balance: fast enough that the content is still timely, slow enough that it doesn't feel like a bot fired the same post to five apps simultaneously.

## When to skip the delay entirely

Time-sensitive announcements, breaking news for your brand, or anything with a hard deadline (a sale ending today, an event starting soon) are the exception — for these, near-simultaneous publishing across every platform is usually the right call, even if it sacrifices some of that "naturally adapted" feeling.
